The Bremer Kaffeehaus-Orchester
The Bremen Coffee House Orchestra is an ensemble of five musicians who have dedicated themselves full-time to the
cultural phenomenon of "coffee house music" since 1990.
That is now 33 years.
There must be a special motivation that keeps an ensemble together for so long: In order to remain - for the most part - the
same for 33 years, we had to and still have to change again and again.
Anselm Hauke (double bass), Constantin Dorsch (violin), Gero John (violoncello) and Klaus Fischer (flute, piccolo, clarinet,
bass clarinet, alto saxophone) have been with the ensemble from the beginning, Machiko Totani joined in 2022 to replace
Johannes Grundhoff on piano.
After starting while still studying music, we developed and cultivated a "classical" coffeehouse repertoire in our
first twelve years, from Strauss to Grieg, from Lincke to Lehár, from Elgar to Toselli, and back again.
In 2002, our CD "Winter Wonderland" marked the beginning of an affair with swing music that has not really ended
to this day. In the following years, North American swing was gradually joined by South American tango, French chanson,
Mozart, Ravel, Shostakovich, Japanese cherry blossoms, jazz from Duke Ellington to Thelonius Monk, the Beatles and
always something new.
In a nutshell:
For us, the music of the Bremen Coffee House Orchestra is the result of the lively way in which we - as performers, arrangers and
composers - connect with the extremely diverse forms of music of the last 75 years and just as much with the "classics"
of the last three and a half centuries. We modestly call it "coffee house music of the 21st century".
The constant development of the repertoire not only makes it easy for us to stay alert and flexible, but also ensures that the
relationship with our audience is constantly refreshed. Playful openness, an interest in musical frontier areas and a communicative
basic attitude affectionately turned towards this audience do not allow boredom to arise, even after 33 years.
We look forward to every new concert. Again and again.
